The support section on the .Mac home page says some folks may be having problems with Mail. However it talks about timing out when checking for mail...I'm getting this error message when trying to send. Anyone else having this issue?

Who is your ISP? Many ISPs do not allow the use of an external SMTP server. They do this so they can control whether the user is a SPAMMER or not.

Try using the SMTP server that the ISP provides.

I'm on SBC (AT&T now) DSL. I can send using gmail's smtp server just fine. I don't see why I couldn't use .Mac... I got an email addy when I signed up for the sbc dsl,and that address ends with sbcglobal.net. I suppose the server would be smtp.sbcglobal.net ?

Just to clarify, when you use Gmail, are you using the web interface? Or are you using a client, like Mail.app?

Looks correct to me. It was all automagically set up for me in mail when I started the .Mac trial, so it should be correct. One thing I'm not sure of - should I use SSL? It's not checked in the server settings

For a while I was using Mail.app to POP my gmail account. Sending messages that way worked fine. Since then I have stopped using POP, and deleted that account from Mail. When I send something from my @mac address I get the error about smtp.mac.com. However it still remembers the gmail smtp information, and I can tell it to send through that.
That works, but it just bothers me that I can't use smtp.mac.com
