Many years ago I had jailbroken my iPhone 4 - this was probably around 2011.
I ended up removing the jailbreak from the 4 by updating it via iTunes. Ever since then, I've never been able to update iOS over the air.

Every time I got a new iPhone, I restored all my data from a backup I made of my previous iPhone. After restoration, both the iPhone 5s, and now the 7 cannot receive over the air updates. It just gets stuck on "Checking for updates" and the wheel keeps spinning.

If I wipe the iPhone with iTunes, over the air update functionality returns. But the moment I restore my data - whether that's from iTunes or from iCloud, the functionality disappears.

I hope you guys can help me get OTA functionality back! Updating via iTunes every time has become a pain.

    Thank you very much!

    Try this. Worth a shot.

Make a new backup. Disable Find My iPhone and put your device in DFU mode. Upgrade (if it prompts you) and restore as new. THEN, restore from your backup.

It shouldn't work as what you say indicates it's something in your backup, but what have you got to lose at this point?

Or you reinstall iOS and don't restore from backup. Problem solved.

Frankly, the ability to do OTA updates is way overrated (I never did it and it seemed to lead to misc issues for some posters later) and if that is the only thing you lack right now, I wouldn't miss it.
