iPod Cannot use my Apple ID (not .me) with iCloud?

My Apple ID has never been associated with a .mac or .me email addy. I created one, long ago, but never used it. Now iCloud only wants to use a .me addy?

Is there any way to merge iTunes accounts? None of my purchase history is from my .me account.
