Below is a screenshot from my Dad mbPro. He just updated to Mavericks and is having issues with his downloads section in the finder. As you can see the files are there but they aren't clickable or accessible. The other shot is the all files section and as you can see the MP4 is listed and i can open it. I'm at a total loss so any suggestions would be great?

Do a command-r boot to recovery then go to the Utilities menu and launch Terminal. Enter "resetpassword" (all one word and without the quotes). You will get a window popup like below. Select his user account in the drop down then click reset at the bottom right. Once it is down go ahead and reboot.

This will reset his user folder permissions back to default and should fix it.
