can't access time machine backups file is locked and cannot be unlocked!

HELP!! can't access time machine backups file is locked and cannot be unlocked! Have tried changing permissions - lets me change to read & write then when you lock it or just close the info window it switches back to custom and the external is locked and I can't get access! Please can some one help as this has all my work on it!
