Can't add Legacy Contact

My phone has been updated to 15.2 and the contact's phone has been updated to 15.2, yet when I go to add the contact as my Legacy Contact, I immediately get a message that they "removed themselves as your legacy contact." They, however, got nothing except the text that I had sent to them during the process of adding them as my Legacy Contact.

I get an email from Apple saying a Legacy Contact has been added and then seconds later an email saying the Legacy Contact has been removed.

Any suggestions?

Add - I did read the other post about adding a recovery contact, but none of the issues described there are what are happening to me. I am able to go through the entire process and for a second see that the contact has been added, before then seeing that they "removed themselves." I've been texting with my contact and they definitely have upgraded to 15.2 and they definitely haven't done anything to remove themselves.

Just tried it on my iPhone 13 pro max running the public release of iOS 15.2 and it worked for me adding a legacy contact and informing them via a message.

I was given the choice of email or message and chose the latter.

im getting same issue. contact removed automatically. but my contact (wife) did nothing.

Same issue for me, contact removed within seconds of adding them, even though the contact did nothing.

As I said, both phones were running 15.2. Yesterday, it finally worked, but we'd tried numerous times and both rebooted our phones on Friday. As far as we know, nothing changed between Friday and Sunday, go figure.

My wife is running 15.2 and actually added me as a Legacy Contact first. However, when I try to add her, I get the message saying a Legacy Contact has been added and then seconds later another message saying the Legacy Contact has been removed.
