Can’t boot into Safe Mode

Apple silicon Macs have a different way to get into Safe Mode:

Starting up your Mac in safe mode may help you diagnose problems with your Mac.

But when I press/hold shift while on the startup disk / options screen, nothing happens.

Anyone able to get into Safe Mode on an M1?
