It's actually a very easy process, and even the install is pretty easy on those old machines. And you'll feel a great sense of accomplishment when you're done.
So apparently I need a spudger to remove the battery connector. Is that necessary or can I use something else?

If there isn't one in the kit you get with the replacement drive, you can use something else. Edge of a credit card, random piece of thin plastic. Just something that doesn't conduct electricity.

I like to use a guitar pick for those kind of "adjustments"
I don't have a guitar, but I'll try a credit card. What about the t6 torx screwdriver? Is there any way to remove the screws without one? I'm not sure if the drive I'm getting comes with a kit.

You really want the screwdriver. You can always order one from amazon or ifixit. You don't want to strip them by using the wrong tool. They are very cheap.

Hey guys, so I just took my MBP to the Apple Store and they replaced the hard drive bracket and it worked again. Turns out it wasn't the hard drive. Even better, they didn't charge me anything because apparently it was covered by quality program. Anyways, thanks to everyone who helped!
