Can't Bring up Alternate Boot menu

Hi all,

Working perfectly the other day, today I hold down Alt when booting and I either get no response, or a grey screen with cursor and no icons.

No access to Lion Recovery partition, main hard disk, boot camp or external firewire - anyone got any ideas? Running permissions and repair now but thought I'd check in case that hasn't sorted it in the morning.

Edit: Repairing disk permissions did nothing sadly.
