I hold down cmd and select a few but then right clicking and pressing delete only deletes one. Is there anything else I can try?

I'm on Monterey and it's behaving the same way. I think it's a bug since you can select multiple.

Im on Big Sur. Im trying to delete old attachments but to be honest I dont understand how clearing them relates to iCloud. Would really like to delete attachments from all.

Actually I just found a way to do it. Instead of going through the Messages app, go to Apple menu > About This Mac > Storage > Manage > Messages. There you'll see all of the attachments and can select all (or some) and bulk delete there.

I don't understand your iCloud concern related to this though.

I have been doing it this way but it doesn't look like this include all the attachments. I don't know what the selection is based on. Also a few have reappeared perhaps this is getting pulled from iCloud.

There are some contacts that I have been sent a lot of photos for work that I would like to bulk delete these.... but not delete the whole conversation.

The iCloud question is if I delete the attachments the way you say or through messages on MacOS does this also delete from iCloud backup or will they just be pulled again when scrolling through messages. Is there a way to delete the attachments so that it deletes on iCloud too.

I'm not sure what the answers are to your questions. There's a chance that some of this behavior is just buggy for now; maybe attachments re-appearing is related to Messages in the Cloud, but I don't really know.
