Can't calibrate new XDR MacBook Pro display - missing 'Color' button, calibration option.

I wrote an app that allows you to apply icc profiles to any Apple vendored display (even the MBP built-in screen), and keep them applied across reboots, standby/wake etc. You can find it here: StudioICC

It's not for creating the profiles like the old macOS calibration tool did, it's only for applying already calibrated icc files like the ones you get from SpyderX or X-rite colorimeters.

The app is a bit on the expensive side, as I'm working on integrating with the ambient light sensor of the colorimeters to automatically switch profiles. But the 14-day trial should be enough to help you understand if it's what you need.

Hello Alin, I successfully installed StudioICC but I got myself into trouble. I tried various .icc files on my late 2023 M3 MBP. I chose an .icc that obviously was not compatible with the XDR display. What happens now is that when i boot up and enter my login password the screen goes black momentary then returns to the login screen. So I am in an infinite loop and can not log in. So now the MBP is unusable. I've tried Safe Mode and reinstalling Sonoma. No luck. Can you assist? I sure need help.

Have you tried deleting StudioICC while in Safe Mode? That should stop the profile from being applied.

You can also delete the profiles stored in ~/Library/Application Support/StudioICC for good measure.

If safe mode is still unusable, try recovery mode by shutting down and pressing and holding the power button. You’ll have access to a terminal there

Hello Alin. That worked! Thank you so much for your most helpful and quick response. FYI: I had to do a few other things to get your suggestions to work. 1) Since I could not get past the Sonoma login screen using the built in display I had to connect an external monitor, keyboard and mouse using clamshell mode. This allowed me to successfully login to Sonoma using the monitor profile of the external display. Also I was initially unable to delete StudioICC because I set it to launch and start up so it was already running. I had to Quit StudioICC via the menu bar icon. After deleting both StudioICC and the directory you mentioned I rebooted with the MBP open and was able to login using the built in monitor. Again, thank you so much!!!!

After tinkering around a bit, I think I found a workaround that will allow you to calibrate your MacBook Pro's XDR display using the built in Calibration Assistant…

The Display Calibration Assistant app is still sitting on your MacBook Pro's hard drive, and is located here:

Go to this folder, locate the Display Calibrator app, hold down the Option key, then right click on this app and select ‘Open’ (this will launch the calibrator in Expert Mode).

Calibrate and save the newly created color profile as you normally would using the Display Calibration Assistant.

Now, launch the ColorSync Utility app in the Utilities folder, click on 'Devices' on the tool bar, then click the drop down arrow next to 'Displays' on the left side of that window.

Click on 'Color LCD' (this is the default profile that your MacBook Pro is currently using), and then go to the right side of that window, and click the drop down arrow next to 'Current Profile' and choose 'Other'.

This will bring up the folder window where the default color profile (and now your newly created color profile) is saved. Select your newly created color profile and click 'Open'.

The system will bring up TouchID for authentication, but on my MacBook it just sort of hung there, so I chose ‘Use Password’ instead.

Your new profile should now be selected and will be the main color profile used until you create and select a new one using this same method, and process.

This has worked for me and has stayed put after a few restarts, so hopefully it works for you all as well.

Hopefully Apple addresses this soon. So many unnecessary steps when we could have just hit two or three buttons had they not removed (or hid) the Color Calibration Assistant and access to color profiles in the Display Preferences!

Hey! I'm on an M4 Mac (2024) now dealing with the same xact problem, but I can't find Display Calibrator even. I have found this relevant ColorSync Utility but can't MAKE a profile in any way that I'm aware of. Any tips or experiences? Forgive me if you've addressed this, I'm reading through the whole thread.
