That's strange. OK then still no Terminal, what's wrong with opening Activity Monitor (which is a good app to have in the Dock always) and selecting what you want to quit and hit the big red 'quit' button. You can quit the Finder and the Dock as well as 'SystemUIServer', which is useful for putting the X-Assist drop down menu back where it belongs.

the finder icon is a bit tricky. in my experience, relaunching finder or just the dock will most likely not update anything.

the only method that always works is by restarting OS X, provided that the icon is applied correctly.
