Can't connect iPhone 5 and iPad 4 Bluetooth together

So in the Bluetooth menu, my iPhone and iPad recognize each other but everytime I try to connect the Bluetooth together, they won't do it.

Also, is there any benefit to doing this? I guess my question is what is the point of this feature besides hotspot tethering?
