Can't connect to MySQL from localhost

I've just installed MySQL version 5.1.20 beta. I've installed the preferences pane and the MySQL Admin Tool. When I try to connect through the Admin tool I get an error message "Could not connect to MySQL instance at mike.local. Error: Host 'I'm_Not_Saying' is not allowed to connect to this MySQL server (code 1130)" I can ping myself. Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

I've looked on MySQLs site and can't find a reason why it would do this. Is the fact that I have cable internet causing a problem?

Could not connect to MySQL joomla install.

Hi I realize this is an old post but I found it when searching about the same trouble. I tried all kinds of crazy things to fix this problem and all I needed to do was use "root" as the name AND the password. I was following an instruction guide that said to leave password blank. Hope this helps others.
