I'm running 10.6.8 on a 2010 iMac and for the past couple of years I have been connecting to our server using "Connect To Server" and typing "smb://{server name}" with no problems. All of a sudden today when I try to connect to the server this way I get the "Connection Failed" dialog. However if I use "Connect To Server" and type "smb://{IP address}" it connects just fine. Is there a Preference file or something that got corrupted?

thats a DNS issue. perhaps the dns server isnt working or your mac or router no longer knows who the correct dns server is. start with the router and go from there.
