I have mountain lion with the latest updates on imac 27 (the latest).
I created a folder with many subfolders:
Now when I want to create a new folder I can't do it by right-clicking, because I don't have enough "white space", so it choose the folder I'm standing next to, instead of opening that menu for creating a new folder.

The work around is to create that folder elsewhere and drag it there, but it doesn't seem like the right way to do it.

    How should I do it?

Click the gear in the toolbar - it has a "create new folder" item. Also shift-cmd-N creates a new folder.
