I am trying to create a shortcut to the 'Home' folder on my desktop using the crtl, option key drag method, but it keeps giving me the following error

'The Item 'Dan' (home folder name) is in use right now and cannot be opened.'

'Try again when the current task (such as moving or copying an item or emptying the trash) is complete.

I have tried restarting my macbook and the error is the same. Any ideas?

I'm running OSX 10.5.2 on a genuine Macbook Pro

Cheers

You need to hold the command and option keys while dragging your home folder to the desktop, this will create the shortcut.

Using control and option will attempt to move or copy it to the desktop.
