For light users it will be, Faster boot up, better battery life, better thermals, better performance, iOS apps running on Macs from day one, also be cheaper than intel Macs. We'll be getting Face ID and other goodies in future Macs, thanks to arm chipsets. 😊 good riddance intel.

Shut up and take my money. 😍💰

but if you want/need something now, I wouldn't wait. These first gen AS Macs are a bit of an unknown - they might be great, they might not. If you rely on anything like Bootcamp, definitely stick with an Intel MacBook for now.

agree with you there, for power users and people that need bootcamp stick with a intel MacBook for the time being.

for light user like myself, loving the benefits that arm will bring, much improved battery life, thermals, iOS apps on Macs,
scary how the current iPad Pros destroy most pc on the markets.

Performance will be even better than the current a12x chips, win win for us light users.

The MacBook Pro runs circles around the Air performance wise, I highly recommend getting the Pro instead of an upgraded Air, you won't get what you pay for because the performance of the Air gets throttled. The Air is fine for surfing and Office, but don't expect more from it. I got the base MacBook Pro with 8gb ram and I have never experienced any problems using Fl Studio.

2020 MacBook Pro vs 2020 MacBook Air - Full Comparison!

Hi everybody!

I have a high-spec iMac for most work at home. Most of what I do is record vocals on Logic Pro X with a few plugins (namely Melodyne, compression, reverb), and sometimes use some software instruments. I do the occasional video edit here and there (1080p). I watch the occasional Netflix or YouTube video (1080p). I also do video calls now and then.

I'm looking to get a MacBook for when I go out of town, maybe once every month or two. The two options I'm interested in are:

-The 2020 baseline MacBook Pro (i5, 8gb memory, and 256gb storage)
-The 2020 MacBook Air (i5, 16gb memory, and 256gb storage)

With the specs listed above, both of these MacBooks would come out to roughly the same price. Out of these two, which one do you think would be the best option? I'm attracted to the Air because it's more portable. But while the specs of this Air are higher than that of the Pro, I know there are thermal limitations and what not.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I'd actually go with the 4-port model. Baseline on that one at least gives you some future-proofing and comfortable headroom for the present. But if your only options are 2020 Air or 2020 2-port 13" MacBook Pro, I'd go with the latter. The former lacks a heatpipe/radiator to connect the processor's heatsink to the system's fan and it's not like that machine won't still get really hot under loads. It's such a known issue that there's a whole several-page thread about mods that people have done to remedy it (making it an interesting science project, just not fun for you the person about to shell out $1200ish for it).

I’d get the Pro just for the better cooling. I have a 2020 Air and I love it but it gets way too hot. Can’t really even call it a laptop because you’ll get second degree burns if you use it on your lap

Put down the crack pipe.

iPad pros do well on synthetic benchmarks tooled to run on them. Woopty do! I can stare at my glorious numbers that mean nothing!

My iPad Pro is a glorified notepad. It’s not useful for much else.

I returned a 2020 i5 Air because it maxed the fan when using Zoom. Bought an i5 10th gen pro and it’s quiet. Can’t speak for the 8th gen model which I believe only has one fan.
