Hi,
I use to love to work with the built in applications in my iOS and macOS devices due to the fact that it intergreate perfectly with everything in the system.

Now I have a private and a work mail and my work mail uses Exchange and I know that it works in mail.app also but what is the best way to use it? In outlook or mail.app?

How do you do?

My Microsoft Hotmail account won't work on any apps such as Samsung's or Apple's or any third-party client anymore. If I try they send an email saying you need to use Outlook app. If I ignore it it will cause it to fail to sync and I'll be asked to re-enter my password in settings. I never found a solution so I simply stopped using the account.

I refuse to be forced to use an app I don't want to use.

Here's what you'll get on any device or third-party client when you attempt to set up Outlook or Exchange/Hotmail email accounts:

I tried the 'use another mail app' link but it eventually fails to sync and denies the correct login and I have to remove, readd and it repeats.

I must be missing something. I have an old MS Outlook account which I set up many years ago because it was required for provision of an internet account with our national ISP Telecom Australia. That was 15 years ago. At that time MS Outlook was compatible with Mac OS 9. Later that changed and MS merged my Outlook email address (@hotmail.com) into an @live.com address. Apple did the same thing merging my @me.com address into an @icloud.com address. These old address' continue to receive email and my @LIVE account is still an Exchange account on my MBP.
It works perfectly with the Mail app and syncs with both my iDevices and with Outlook on my Windows desktop at work. It includes integration with contacts, calendars, reminders and notes as well as MS OneDrive on my MBP.
Sometimes in an attempt to cover every contingency too much information is given, Google does this too.
My advice would be to try it as an exchange account and see if it works as required.

I still got my @Hotmail.com and @me.com addresses. No one made me change it into @live.com or @icloud.com? Odd.

My Hotmail will give me that 'action required' mail and I'll click the link to use my more preferred mail app and it will just stop syncing and complain the password is wrong a few days later. I never could fix it permenantly. Had to remove, re-add, and click that link every few days. Got too annoying so I stopped using it.

It answer to the OP's question likely depends on his current version of macOS.

My Exchange (Office 365) account in Mail (Sierra) serves me just fine but I'm not integrating any of the other Exchange services (Calendars, Notes etc).

I have a client using macOS Outlook and I'd talk that person out of it if I could. Stores messages "On My Computer" and it's a nightmare when the Outlook database has issues…rare, but it's happened.

Apple Mail is fine connecting to my work's MS Exchange Server outlook thing using Catalina.

Whilst both work fine, I do tend to keep my work related MS Exchange connection away and use the Outlook client for those but only if I need to :) I prefer to access it via the browser interface. A few reasons for that, and mainly professional so I can keep the contacts separate and out of my search, some level of improved integration with the rest of the office 365 suite etc.

What I do do is add it as a calendar to my MacOS calendar so at least I have a single overview of all my meetings and that they don't clash with private stuff, or that of other clients.
