Can't delete photos from iPhone

I've noticed recently that I cannot delete photos from the Photos app on my iPhone (iOS 4.3.5). The trashcan icon is no longer there, and the delete button when selecting multiple photos is no longer there. I suppose I could delete in iPhoto on my Mac, but that's just ridiculous. What gives?

Photos > choose an album > Action button in the bottom left > select photos > Delete button
