that's really strange. That makes no sense at all why it would fail if it's the right firmware.

Yep this^, and make sure (since you said in the OP that you have a 6s plus) you download the one that is labeled:

    iPhone8,2_9.0.2_13A452_Restore.ipsw

Only other things to really suggest are basic stuff that you'd probably laugh at :p
    - Did you update iTunes to the latest version?
    - Did you restart computer?
    - Are you sure it's a 6s plus?

Wish I had a better answer for ya. 9.0.2 is still being signed by Apple so it's definitely not that. I just restored to 9.0.2 yesterday on my 6s using my MacBook Air and didn't have the 'firmware not compatible" issue you are having.

iTunes won't restore a phone down, even if you use Option+Click and an IPSW you've downloaded. However, if you put the device into recovery or DFU, it'll probably let you use the IPSW.

Even DFU won't let you install a non-signed iOS version.

Yeah, but seeing as OP is trying to go to 9.0.2, which is signed, as long as he gets an untampered or modified copy, iTunes should restore in DFU mode.
