Perhaps Apache is having difficulty starting.

Using a web browser, navigate to http://localhost and http://localhost/~<your login name>

If nothing shows up, open Applications/Utilties/Console and stop/start the service again. What do you see being logged?

what do I have to type into the console to restart the service

Many Thanks

The Console just displays the system log (I think you're thinking of Terminal). What I meant was, open Console so you can see the logs, then using the Personal Web Sharing preference stop and start the process and see what's logged.

When I stop and start Personal Web Sharing I see:
Code:
/usr/sbin/apachectl stop: httpd stopped
Processing config directory: /private/etc/httpd/users/*.conf
 Processing config file: /private/etc/httpd/users/<my name>.conf
/usr/sbin/apachectl start: httpd started

And did you try accessing http://localhost/~<your account> to see if it works?

I think this is what you want lol

Code:
 Processing config file: /private/etc/httpd/users/mattsaunders.conf
fopen: No such file or directory
httpd: could not open document config file /System/Library/WebObjects/Adaptors/Apache/apache.conf
/usr/sbin/apachectl start: httpd could not be started

i tried http://localhost/~mattsaunders

and it did not work

Ok, so Apache isn't starting. Does /System/Library/WebObjects/Adaptors/Apache/apache.conf exist on your Mac?
