Can't get icloud to push notes

Hi guys I just wanted to know how to put my notes on icloud, my contacts and calendar are already on it.
When I try to enable that on my ipad 2 it asks me to create a "@me account" do I really need that? and will it change my Apple ID?

Yea, I think you need to. And no, it won't change your apple ID
