I've tried to hold down both buttons for 10 secs, 9 secs, 8 and 7 secs (before releasing the lock button)... with no luck. At about 9 secs the unlock disappears and the screen goes blank, but every time the apple logo still appears and the phone gets stuck there.

Any ideas?

try this!!

1. Ensure that the iDevice is switch on then plug it into your PC/Mac

2. Switch off the iDevice (once sync is finished etc!)

3. Once the iDevice is switched off, press and hold in the power button only (the top right hand button) for 3 secs.

4. Without releasing the power button, press and hold in the home button (lower middle button!) for 10secs.

5. Release only the power button and continue to hold the home button for approx 10-20secs.

6. you should be in DFU mode :)

There is a tutorial on the iclarified website!

Is the 'unlock' the lockscreen? if so...you start the process with the iPhone plugged in & off.
You are describing a hard reset.
