I just got an Apple TV HD. I tried to set up home-sharing on my two computers (Big Sur) but I can't enable it.

Media sharing > Home-sharing (login), Share photos with Apple TV> But the screen that comes up is greyed out and I can't select anything .

Any ideas?

I have been having the same issue and also made sure the Photo Library was the selected System Photo Library in preferences in Photos, but still no luck. It has been broken in all of the Big Sur Betas, as well as the final public release, 20B29. The 'Choose Photos' drop down sheet is always greyed out. When you click OK, the box is checked, but when you quit and re-open System Preferences, the box is unchecked.

Hopefully Apple fixes it, or someone has a solution. That is one major bug that is still lingering. I never ran Catalina, so don't know if it worked in Catalina. My Big Sur install is a clean install to an external drive and my Photos Library was copied and updated on the external drive.

Yup thats it! Yeah I am the same I skipped Big Sur and did a clean install on one of my computers, but neither work so its OS related I think.

That’s interesting. I wonder if it’s a particular file type found in the library that could be messing it up. I only have images, no video, but some might be that high efficiency format.

I created a new Photos library and added about 100 JPG images, and one PNG. Set it as the new System Library and it still does not work. Still greyed out on the 'Choose' panel.

It is fixed in macOS Big Sur 11.1 Beta 20C5048k! Make sure the AppleTV is running tvOS 14.2. Mine was on 14.0 and the Photos tab was blank, but Movies, TV, and Home Videos were populated. Once I updated to 14.2, the selected albums I chose were populated in the Photos tab.

Apple TV not to blame?

Photos don’t show on Apple TV. The problem description in this discussion exactly matches my problem since biting the bullet and moving to macOS Big Sur v11.0.1 on my iMac a week ago. The inability to make the System Preferences option to home share photos ‘stick’ and the greyed-out choices does suggest an OS problem. Or some prerequisite setting I am not aware of. But it seems illogical to fault the Apple TV. Photos worked with Mojave and my Apple TV bought in Feb2015, pre-gen4 and pre-tvOS. How do I acquire the version of Big Sur you say fixes it? Apple says my OS is fully up-to-date.

Sign up for Apple’s beta software program or wait until 11.1 is released. They just released 11.1 Beta 2 so it might still be a few weeks before 11.1 is officially released to the public.

I installed v11.1 yesterday and can confirm home sharing of Photos is no longer greyed out, and my older Feb2015 Apple TV now lists, and displays Photos. Some possible issue with losing hierarchy of folders/albums, but good enough.
