Hi. I’m not 100% sure this is an ios16 problem but I have only just noticed it after recently updating.

I sometimes iMessage stuff to myself to look at later. I tried today but iMessage to myself is unavailable - I’m in green not blue. I can iMessage anyone else no problem. I can iMessage myself from my iPad and both my macs just not the iPhone. I have restarted the iPhone, signed out and back in to iCloud. Not a major problem if I don’t get it sorted but just thought I’d ask if anyone has any idea. Many thanks for reading.

What happens if you create another contact for yourself in Contacts using the same Apple ID email and phone number? Are you able to message yourself that way?

Have you tried turning off Messages, reboot and turn it back on again? I didn't notice those steps in your OP.

What happens if you wait a couple of minutes with the message open; does it change to blue? And how are you addressing yourself? By name, by phone number, or email address?

And just to be sure, you're not on the beta, right?

Added: can anyone else in your household who is also on iOS 16 message themselves?

Hi. No it doesn’t change to blue. I’ve tried all three forms of address. Yes my son has no problems imessaging either himself or me. No I’m not on the beta.
Thanks for thinking about my problem, it is appreciated
Do you have your own card in the contacts list on your phone? If so, is it the exact same name and number as what you are trying to text?

This happened to me! For some reason my phone number in my contact card was listed twice... once under iPhone and once under 'Other'. I removed the second entry and it started working fine after that.

However I'm now only seeing the messages I 'send' - on iOS15 both the sent and received messages showed up

What I have noticed that around half the messages I’ve kept have phone numbers rather than contact names which may be something to do with it( correct names are in the contacts app)

I have the same issue , it's driving me nuts !
EDIT : I tried turning off iMessage , rebooting , turning it back on . No change whatsoever .
OTOH , first message is green but others are blue.

That's a new & odd one! There is an iMessage bug that iOS 16.0.1 should have addressed but assuming you've already installed it and the problem persists, I would definitely call Apple to escalate it to their tech team. It may be a different but related issue to the one they just patched.
