I can't import my photos to my mba. iTunes will open automatically when I connect the phone, but I'm greeted with a message saying I need to download the latest version of iTunes.

I updated my iTunes, and retry and get the exact same message.

I tried emailing myself the photos I needed, but that failed to work multiple times (I made sure the size was reduced)

I have the latest update on my iPhone 6s too

You got the message that you should download the latest version of iTunes, bI think it will not affect you to import photos. Moreover, you have updated your iTunes to the latest version. I wonder whether the popped up message stops you using iTunes to import iTunes.

You can use the little known app Image capture that is on every Mac.

Can manually get the pictures imported into a folder say on desktop then do what you want.
