I've been wanting to install Jaguar on my G3 (PowerMac2,2) for a project I had planned, however, judging from the title of this thread, it hasn't worked out.

Each time I try to boot from the (burned) install CD, it doesn't do so much as cause a kernel panic or display garbage on the CRT and lock up. I've tried all my standard troubleshooting techniques: different disc images, different discs, different burner drives, clearing the PRAM, safe mode, verbose boot... nothing has worked. It did boot the installer once, but it must have been a fluke, as when it asked me for disc 2, it crashed as soon as I inserted it.

If you have any advice on this issue, please feel free to leave a response!

P.S. for any of you who saw my previous thread regarding RAM issues, those have since been resolved

Does it boot any other CDs? OS 9, a different OS X version, ect?
This sounds like the drive is bad.

The drive does boot other CDs, including a 9.2.2 universal disc and a version of Tiger modified to work with G3s.

Alright folks, I think I fixed the problem. My solution was to completely forego the CD drive and use the installer from an external FireWire drive instead, installing the optional apps after the initial install.

The kernel doesn't seem to like the CD drive; when I put in a CD with some developer tools, instant crash. It's confusing, especially considering Tiger will load from the CD drive just fine.

Jaguar is a weird animal... pun intended. It'll install on my Bondi iMac G3 and Wallstreet PDQ, but only if I remove the 512mb of RAM and put in two 64mb sticks. Otherwise, it exhibits the same symptoms that you describe.
