I was finally able to get the update from iTunes, downloaded it and it went thru all the motions but when it got to updating the firmware, I got an unknown error (20) message and was not able to restore the firmware. It said I had to restore, which would erase everything on the iPhone. I tried that but it proceeded to download the 1.1.4 update. It then tried to install that and again it failed with the same error message. When I re-plug-in my iPhone to my mac, it says it found an iPhone in recovery mode. Plus my iPhone is showing me a graphic I've never seen of a usb wire pointing to the iTunes logo. I am stuck and unable to update or restore and now I have no phone to call Apple with. What do I do? Please help!

I downloaded the 200 meg file from iTunes when it said the update was available. I got no errors but now the phone shows the connector pointing to an iTunes disk, the phone doesn't show anything in iTunes & it says it can't connect to the iTunes store.

i just updated my old iphone too, but albeit it doesnt have my sim card in as that is in my new 3G iphone.

But when it was done, it showed me that same graphics with a message saying insert valid sim card to activate.

You sure your sim is not damaged or something?

No, my sim card should be fine. I got the phone just a few weeks ago from AT&T. The phone worked fine just before the upgrade. Is it part of the process that it has to reconnect to the iTunes store to finish the upgrade?

Ah, don't worry. It\s not broken at all. You'r ephone is just stuck in DFU (recovery mode). This is usually what you go into when unlocking the phone etc. It';s really nothing to worry about.

However, (you're going to say I suck for this), I'm not too sure how to get out of it on a mac. I remember when my iPhone got stuck in DFU mode, I hooked it up to a windows machine and used an old program to try and update it to 1.0.2 (or at least a really old firmware). About half way through, the program gave me an error and, to my delight, kicked the phone out of DFU mode.

I'd recommend just going onto google and typing in 'iPhone stuck in DFU mode'. Take a look through a few forums. But most of all, don't panic!
    It's fixable.

HOpe i've been some minor help help at least, and have calmed the worries (I freaked out when it happened to me!).

Well, this time I have gotten past the firmware update and it restarted my iPhone but then just gave me the option to make an emergency phone call with the phone. Is this a joke?

One thing I have tried which I have a feeling might have helped... I took the iPhone Dock out of the path. My usb cable connects directly to my iPhone and the Mac now. In the distant past, Apple had problems with USB devices getting in the way.

But here I am stuck, with just the ability to make an emergency phone call while it still has that funky usb cable to itunes logo screen.

So disappointing and now I am late for work. Thanks, Apple.

I take it the only emergency phone call I can make with the phone is to 911 since I was not able to call Apple. I have just made an appointment with my local Apple Store for tomorrow at 2 PM which means I am without a phone until then. This totally sucks.

    network timeout

    I installed 2.0.
iTunes recognizes my iPhone, but says the network connection has timed out.
I have unpluged it and tried to activate my phone for the last 45 minutes...nothing.

All I have is emergency call ability.
    This sucks....any ideas?

Now the only thing that happens is I can make an emergency call on my iPhone. When I turn it on I still see that usb cable to iTunes logo graphic and I can slide the unlock mechanism which brings me to a keypad for making an emergency call. That's it.

When I plug the iPhone into my Mac, it shows up in iTunes but all I get is a white screen that says iPhone and it's endlessly trying to access the iTunes Store. All I can do is eject the iPhone. I can't restore or anything.

I am totally stuck now and I've tried restarting my iPhone, restarting my Mac, restarting iTunes, etc. Nothing's working.

Just my luck - now I have to go to the Apple Store when they are going to be slammed with customers.

i just downloaded the 2.0 software via itunes, but it wouldn't install... the software just sat there... eventually it simply disappeared... now when i click "check for updates" on my iphone, it says I have the most current version (1.1.4).

did apple take down the 2.0 update?

Check out this other thread. Folks have been on the phone with tech support and Apple appears to be aware of the problem.

I guess in this case, patience is a virtue, even though things appear dire. I guess I should have left my iPhone at home plugged into my Mac. I think I'll try again at lunchtime.

The "network timeout" message went away, then I got a message stating that I did not have a secure connection and that I should make sure my SST 3.0 or TLS 1.0 were active (they were).

I did some restarting of my computer and iTunes finally recognized my iPhone.
I believe it was an Apple issue and as stated in the last post, we just have to be patient as they work out the bugs.

    Its OK just be patient

I had the same problem downloaded firmware, it reseted iphone. Then I got the same message. The store is just busy. You have to keep ejecting the iphone and replugging it in and after awhile it will connect.

Don't be down! And don't trek to the apple store. It is their servers. our phone is now working fine, it just needs activation, and it is those servers which are down.

In fact, you've probably fixed it by now. But I thought I'd post in case you hadn't.
