Same here

Same with me. I feel like I'm back to windows :(.
I might jump to Linux now.

Here is how I fixed my problem.

In terminal $ sudo softwareupdate -i -a

after updates are installed restarted and everything was back to normal.

In fact I'm not sure if that solved the case because I also installed snow again but after the installation I still had the same problem.
So I assume it was the update from the terminal or perhaps both.
Anyway, it's working and that's what I wanted. No borrowing my wife's laptop with Bill Gates picture in it :) Happy days!!

Right, I guess I should actually believe you over a bunch of bloggers that have tested and used the OS.

Thanks for the tip. Termnal is actually rejecting my passwor, which I currently don't even have set up. I also dont have a File vault password setup either... Whig takes me back to that authentication issue. I'm going to try resetting the password via the DVD and let you guys know. Honestly, I really doubt thAt it's a failing drive. Here's an interesting fact: after installing SL, I had to reauthorize the computer to play my iTunes store music. What I take from this is tha iTunes does not recognize the compter as beingthe same computer , which leads
me to believe that the computer might be haing trouble recognizig itself as ... well, itself. Does this give you experts any clues?
Also how does it strike you as interesting the I have little snitch, mt? As I mentioned it before, i don't need it but I can't uninstall it!

UPDATE: when resetting the password via the DVD, i notices that passwords colud be reset for the following: my name ( username), and System Administrator (root). Does tha hold true for everybody? Can anyone verify this for me? I thought that I was supposed to be the system administrator.

Problem Solved!

(continuing from the previous post)

I went ahead and reset the password for root and myself, while at it, I noticed an extra option to reset home folder permissions and passwords or somethifng of the kind. When I rebooted, the login screen showed an exta optio for "Other..." user. Out of curiosity, I decided to type in "root" and the password I had setup for tha user. Logged in as a fresh account (solving the issue with creating new accounts), which allowed me to lock and unlock preference pane items (solving THAT issue). When logging in to my account with the new password, keychain access said some stuff about needing to update ignore or create a new login keychain. I simply elected to create a new one, and everything works fine now!

Thank you all for the help, and the patience with my really long posts!

Macrumors rocks!

alzheimer's

Penter, this stuff

which leads
me to believe that the computer might be haing trouble recognizig itself as ... well, itself

I'd call it cyber alzheimer's. It's true that computers are getting more humanized by the day.

Happy day for us yesterday :)

How about, restarting and holding "D" and run the Apple hardware test?
And try starting up in Safe Mode (shift after the startup sound), try installing software / updating from there.
If you have AppleCare, try and install TechToolDeluxe from your AppleCare DVD and run it.

If you don't have the Apple hardware test installed, you can boot from the DVD that is specific to your model of Mac and run it from there I think.

That's all I can think of at the moment.

EDIT: Glad it's fixed...

Once again

Hi everyone,

I think I finally, figured out what triggered this problem: Flash installer!
I had the same problem as penter, but me I couldn't wait so I went ahead and fresh installed snow leopard. The problem was eventually solved. However, I hadn't tried to update flash, UNTIL today... and guess what? it caused me exactly the same problem.
It could be a coincidence, but the last time I upgraded to snow leopard, the FIRST thing I did was trying to update flash...
Now I'll try to live with this issue for a while. I really have no time to mess around with passwords and admin permissions...

Glad you solved the problem Penter :)

UPDATE: I tried exactly what penter suggested. but it didn't work for me :( In fact the accounts prefpane is unlocked when I log in as the root user, and I can't unlock it.

UPDATE 2: Problem solved! it wasn't flash installer , nor admin privileges nor corrupted plist files or whatsoever, it was simply a keyboard layout glitch. I removed all keyboard layouts except US one, and everything came back to normal!

Keyboard layout problem

You were right Kaishin! I had the exact same problem here. I removed all keyboard layout except default one (which isn't US in my case but canadien multilingue). and it solved the problem. NOw I don't know if I can revert to the new keyboard layout I was using. I will try it after I'm done updating.

Thank you!

Thanks everyone. It'd just had the same EXACT problem. It's simply resolved just by moving the new installed keyboard layout to trash. Specifically, mine is KhmerNiDA1.keylayout!!

I'm totally wiping SL and installing XP on my mac.
That's how disappointed and annoyed I am with SL.
