I have a Canon LBP6230dw printer. I recently picked up anew M1 Mac mini and can't for the life of me install the printer driver. There is an updated Big Sur driver on canons website for this printer but when I got to launch the installer, I get a error prompt "Cannot install on this version of the operating system you are using. Run the installer on a version that supports it." I've tried the older ones for Catalina and Mojave all with the same results. Anyone else experience this too? Thanks for any help!

If the driver you installed from the manufacturer's website doesn't work, you should use the driver that macOS downloads when you add the printer. Apple provides the drivers for most devices unlike Windows 10. Uninstall the printer driver you installed by deleting the appropriate folder in the following directory: /Library/Printers

HP drivers for a Canon printer? Interesting.
Sorry - I misread Unknown.jpeg

Software for this printer isn't available from apple when trying to add the printer. No choices are available in the drop down box for driver.

Try downloading the installer again.

Considering that Canon's site claims that driver supports all the way back to 10.10, I can't imagine it's a universal binary. If the printer isn't an AirPrint deivce, it may be just done.

Their support site says it support Big Sur. It doesn’t have to be universal to work on an M1 machine.

I have a Canon MG5550 printer and on my old Mac I had upgraded to Big Sur and the printer seemed to operate with no problems.
Whilst setting up my M1 Mac I went to the Canon website to download the driver package to find that it is not supported for Big Sur. I eventually was able to connect to the printer with the installed driver with Big Sur.
This only gives basic functionality and I could not work out how to remotely operate scanner for the Mac. One solution I found was to use the rarely used Canon PRINT app on my iPhone. I then transferred the file to my Mac using Air Drop.
I think I will be looking for a new printer in 2021 anyway.

I have this problem on my new 2020 intel Mac mini with Big Sur. I use the generic driver for my ricoh laser printer as no real ones available and every time I reboot it erases the driver having to re add the driver all the time. I also have a 2012 Mac mini with hacked Big Sur and that NEVER lost the printer ever in 5 years of owning the machine.
