Hi All! New to the forum and in need of some assistance. I have an iMac that I haven't used for about 3 years and have forgotten the password to log in and I was wonder if there was a way to recover my account. Can any of you recommend a solution?

Thank you in advance!

Here are your options according to Apple. This will get you a new account on the computer but you will not be able to recover any data from your existing account.

If you can't login, you will need to boot into the recovery partition, internet recovery or external boot media.

This is what I normally do:
  1. Restart your Mac. ...
  2. While it is restarting, press and hold the Command + R keys until you see the Apple logo. ...
  3. Go to the Apple Menu at the top and click Utilities. ...
  4. Then click Terminal.
  5. Type “resetpassword” in the terminal window. ...
  6. Then hit Enter. ...
  7. Type your password and a hint. ...
  8. Finally, click Restart.
