Can't Log on to Single User Mode

Hi. Wow. I haven't posted in a looong time. But I have a weird sitch that stumped me and I turn to you guys for any help. I have a 1.33 12" PB G4, with the latest updates on a clean install with no add-ons or buggery. But it refuses to log on to single user mode or verbose mode. What gives? From Apple BT keyboard, built-in keyboard, or USB Apple keyboard. Any thoughts? I am hesitant to reset the PRAM since I have not had to do that in years...

Has an open firmware password been set? This prevents logging into single user mode, or starting up in verbose mode by holding down command V on start up.

try command + s. the invocation (example) is given to log on as a single user (i think)
