8.4.4? The latest update available is 7.9(8163)... 3rd gen was released 2012-2013 depending on if it's ver.1 or ver.2.

Ok I see where you got the 8.4.4 from.. Odd they list the version as 8.4.4 but in "about" in general settings it lists it as 7.9

iCloud device info says it is 8.4.4; on device though its 7.9(8163), just checked, serial number is the same. During the actual update it was 8.4.4 on the screen

Same issue with an Atv gen 3 I picked up today. Just using it for airplay to a stereo but it would be nice if it was logged in to my iCloud.

I too, recently reset my ATV3, and can no longer log into iCloud; It was logged in prior to the reset.

It's frustrating that Apple doesn't share info about silently retired services with the front line support reps; iCloud on the 3rd gen Apple TV has clearly been scrapped, but as others, I can confirm that logging into the iTunes Store does work (which in turn enables Apple TV+ content). Apple support reps not aware of this are just wasting customers' time, and theirs. There needs to be more internal communication.

Since I own several Apple TVs (a combination of 4K models & HD), I can live with this. The primary streaming apps do allow login, and AirPlay works without a problem.

I have had confirmation from Apple that they have disabled iCloud from 3rd Generation tv boxes because they are not supporting them anymore. They had not notified me of this change previously and I am now making a formal complaint to them with the intention of getting financial recompense.

You MAY need to upgrade to a later ATV. The 3rd generation is ancient.
Yeah the passing of a few years time has made it so ancient, it can barely send out the picture, the sound is so degraded it sounds like a phonograph, and in its confusion it replaces all the actors faces with Cary Grant, the hottest actor of its day.

There’s another perfectly good Atv3 running the TV downstairs. This one here in my office is every bit as capable at being an airplay receiver, playing podcasts & radio and displaying photo slideshows for this TV as it was yesterday, right on back to the day it was made. Apple just dropped the ball on the update to match their server-side changes. If it’s an oversight it’s sloppy, and it it’s intentional there’s zero chance I’ll throw good money after bad on another Atv that goes in the trash because Apple has made it dependent on their own systems they won’t maintain.

Same problem here. 3rd gen. Apple TV. I had to reset my Apple ID password a few days ago and when I tried to sign in to iCloud on the Apple TV today I got the "iCloud is unavailable. Try again later" message. Confirmed Apple ID and password was correct. Restarted and reset Apple TV. Same thing happened. I could sign into iTunes Store with the same Apple ID and password without issue, and everything else on the Apple TV works fine. I was on the phone with Apple Support for about 45 minutes and they were unable to offer anything else. Seems odd to have such an isolated issue (I am able to sign into iCloud without problem with a Mac, iPad and iPhone in the same room connected to the same wifi network with the same Apple ID and password.)
I have the same problem. In my case, apple support said that a 3rd gen apple tv is no longer supported.

Nope for me and my TV gen 3!

Monday Jan 16th I tried to log into 2 separate iCloud accounts
and with 2 different airport, an extreme and the older one.
I could not get past th acceptance of either 2 accounts after successfully login in with 6 digit passcode.
this worked Sunday and I decided to use that for a older account
were I networked an area of my house of that iCloud.

I might try later today then just use the tv3 as a airplay from a MacBook Pro.

(the upstairs 2022 tv works great tho!)
