Hi all, this is kind of weird...

Over the years I've had a few Buffalo external drives, and I've always been able to partition them using Disk Utility. I just got another one, brand new, 1tb and I want to break it up into 2 500gb partitions, but the "Partition" option in Disk Utility is greyed out.

I was able to reformat to Mac OS Extended Journaled, so there shouldn't be a problem. Should there? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Change the View (upper left in the Disk Utility window) to "Show All Devices". Then select the top level of the device, then you can Partition.

Thank you! ?

I've been using Macs for many years and I never knew that.

I'm adding a reply in case you already read my previous...

It still doesn't work. It's still greyed out if I select the sub-level. Thanks, though (sigh).

EDIT again: I found out what the problem was. The top level was formatted as a Mster Boot Record, but I reformatted as GUID and now all is well. Thank you, you led me to the right place.

Your edit beat me to it...

On drives with a Master Boot Record Partition Map, I always Erase the disk and install the GUID Partition Map. Then I partition the drive.
