Sierra apparently killed my printer (Canon iP4600): whenever I try to print more than just simple text, I get a blank sheet of paper and the error message "Filter failed".

Has anyone else encountered this problem and found a solution? What I can find on the net regarding this doesn't seem to offer any help.

Canon has released new drivers, here is the Japanese page http://cweb.canon.jp/drv-upd/lasershot/lslxmacosx5.html and you should be able to find the web site for your country.
My multi-function Canon printer does print with new driver, but it leaves the printer with a red error light after each print job, requiring a shut off–turn on again each time. Canon does not test with the betas so I thibk you are screwed if you are running the beta version.

These unfortunately aren't drivers for my printer. There are no updated drivers for the model I use.

Great. Turns out neither Canon nor Apple still offer support for my printer… :(

Now, what was that open source printer drivers suite called?

If you go on Canon's website support under Mac OS X Compatibility, the sierra column, Canon is working with Apple to resolve the compatibility issues with sierra os. I am having a similar issue with my PIXMA MX922. To put it simply, it's across the board. I just spoke with a Canon rep, they're saying they aware of the issues and trying to resolve it soon. The one driver you need is the CUPS driver, the main driver. Still waiting for it. The ICA driver and scanner driver is available for mine, check for yours.

I've seen that, but neither Canon nor Apple will release updated drivers for the iP4600, which is 8 years old by now. Canon has stopped support for it three years ago, and Apple dropped it with the release of Sierra.

I am sorry that Canon doesn't support you printer any longer. I am waiting patiently for my Canon MX922 daily for them to release updated drivers. In general it prints. When I do a label for a cd, the graphical text doesn't print correctly. If I use a different program, I get the "filter failed" error.

Experienced this problem between two Macs (macOS and OS X) attempting to print a PDF on a Canon mf229dw laser printer. Discovered that the problem was not the Macs, the drivers (updated Feb '19) nor the printer but rather the ALPHA CHANNEL in the PDF and Preview's handling of it. Modified the file to remove the alpha channel and was able to print just fine. But any PDF with an alpha channel seemed to choke printing on any system. Also found the file would print in Adobe's Acrobat.
