I have been working to get my MBP networked to a desktop with Vista. I have just recently been able to share folders between the two computers.

All I want is the ability to print off of the PC Desktop from my MBP. I have created a workgroup "AD" and have enable file sharing and printer sharing in both my desktop and MBP. When I go to Printer Setup Utility, I click on More Printers, click on the "AD" workgroup, and all I see is my MBP!

I got to file sharing by connecting to the server 192.168.0.X\Folder.

How do I get this printer to work? (hp 1018 and hp 2575xi)

Thanks!

Have you tried this?

I have tried this. For some reason my workgroup does not show my pc computer when I try to add the printer from my mac. Maybe the real problem is the network, or workgroup that I have created. I have been working on this for hours and haven't gotten anywhere.

Okay, so does any of this apply? Have you tried manually adding it? :)

I tried all of those configurations, and nothing works. The most frustrating thing is that I saw a next door neighbors computer workgroup on the printer tab, and I was able to add his computer with ease!!!! It must be something with Vista... I wish I had two macs.

The below worked for me! I can only print from my HP 2575xi though. I was hoping I could print to my laser 1018, but it appears that it is not supported by macs. I assumed that I could print on it since it was connected to my PC :(

fixed it!!
this little problem was annoying me to no end.
the only way i have found to print from my macbook to vista is to do the following.

on the vista machine that is connected to the printer
1. hold the start button on the keyboard and hit 'r'.
2. type 'cmd' and hit enter.
3. type 'ipconfig' and hit enter.
4. write down the ip address of the vista machine.
5. open control panel.
6. open the printers option and write down the name of the shared printer you want to use from the mac.
7. go back to the control panel and open 'programs and features.
8. on the left sidebar click 'turn windows features on or off'.
9. expand the print services folder and enable all 3 options.
10. hit ok and then wait for the dialog to go away (might take a few minutes).

on the mac you want to print from
1. go to system preferences
2. open print and fax
3. click the plus sign to add a new printer.
4. hold the option button and click 'more printers'.
5. on the top pulldown menu select 'advanced'.
6. on the device pulldown menu select 'lpd/lpr host or printer'.
7. enter the name you want to use for the printer.
8. in the device url field enter:
lpd://(vista computer ip address)/(vista printer name)
9. select the printer model.
10. click add.

try to print something, it should work fine.
i found this after hours and hours of searching the apple support discussion boards.
