Anyone having issues connecting to external drives on their 2016/2017 MBP?

I've got a 2016 13" TB. I've attempted all ports, 2 different USB-C to USB adapters, 4 different harddrives and my phone as well. My computer won't recognize any external storage device.

I can successfully use a USB mouse without any issue.

When I connect these storages devices, they seem to get power and in the Mac OS logs there is some sort of activity in the system logs signalling that the thunderbolt port is doing something. The drives don't appear though, and I can't see them at all with disk utility either.

Not had this problem - mine works fine (albeit a 2017) going through adaptors, or through the dock - all seems to work fine, the only issue I have is hard drives reattach after waking up when using the dock

I know this is elementary, but...

Have you opened Finder preferences (general pane), and checked to see if the option is checked to show hard drives on the desktop?

Which adapters have you tried? I haven't had any issues using the regular USB-C to USB adapter from Apple. But the others, are a mess.

Thanks but yes I made sure that setting is enabled.

I've got a Samsung adapter that came with a Galaxy phone as well as a Nonda mini adapter.
