Can't reformat my HD on my Mac Pro

Hi guys, I'm having issues with my HD that can't back my time machine so I decided to erase the HD and now when I press the erase button I get a I-236? message and its been over an hour and is not half way completed. How can I reformat this HD? or is it fried?
