Can't reply to messages by pulling down?

I thought a new feature was the ability to reply to messages instantly without going to the messages app. For some reason I can't do this nor a can my wife.

This could be user error but I had to ask.

Do you have it where message previews are off? When there off you can quick reply.

If you get a notification on your lock screen, swipe left.

If the phone is unlocked, pull down.
