Hey all.

For the last 3-4 months I have been dealing with this issue, when Im trying to restart or shut down my Mac, it starts the process, desktop icons and top menu dissapear, but thats it. The finder crashes , and is not responding. I can still use the dock.

Only option is to put it on sleep, but right now I need to update to 10.11.6 ,but because of this restart issue I cant.

Maybe anyone of you had the same problem and know how to tackle this?

SOLVED:

I needed to go through the startup/launch app list ,you can access that by going system preferences - Users & Groups - Choose User - User Lists and than uncheck everything. Worked as a charm for me.

Did you try booting into Safe Mode? Any better?
Then a normal boot. Better?

If not, download and install the free app EtreCheck. Post the report and someone may be able to help you.

Edit to add: Also, if the issue doesn't clear up after Safe Mode then normal boot, try booting into a different user account and report the result. It would further assist someone to be able to help you.

I've posted this workaround before, I'll post it again, but few seem interested in trying it.

I, too, have some shutdown problems with El Capitan. The problems disappear when I safe boot, so I'll reckon it's got something to do with a login item or a process I'm running. But my "solution" works around it.

Do this:
1. When it's time to shut down or restart, DO NOT choose either option from the finder menu.
2. Instead, LOG YOURSELF OUT.
3. You'll next see the login screen. At the bottom are options to shut down or restart.
4. Choose either one.

What happens next…?

So tried Safe Mode, I can restart and shut down on that one. But, when I go back on normal boot, same issue - it starts the process and get stuck in the middle, like on screenshot.

If not, download and install the free app EtreCheck. Post the report and someone may be able to help you.

Here is the report:

I've posted this workaround before, I'll post it again, but few seem interested in trying it.

I, too, have some shutdown problems with El Capitan. The problems disappear when I safe boot, so I'll reckon it's got something to do with a login item or a process I'm running. But my "solution" works around it.

Do this:
1. When it's time to shut down or restart, DO NOT choose either option from the finder menu.
2. Instead, LOG YOURSELF OUT.
3. You'll next see the login screen. At the bottom are options to shut down or restart.
4. Choose either one.

What happens next…?

So it all gets stuck on 2. step as I cant get past that, same result as in the screenshot.

Adware:

/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.HotShoppy.agent.plist

~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.MacUpdater.agent.plist

~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.spigot.ApplicationManager.plist

4 adware files found. [Remove]

You have some adware installed there. Run Etrecheck again and click to remove the adware.

The fact that this is fixed by running in safe mode is proof positive this is caused by one or more of the launch/startup items we see in the Etrecheck report, since a safe mode boot stops all those from running. So now it is a matter of figuring out which one is causing this.

I would get rid of all the Symantec stuff. Also, from the crash logs it looks like the Wacom driver is causing problems... so try updating or removing that.

There is also a Google Drive crash, and with its Finder integration, I'm wondering if that may be contributing to your Finder hangs.

When I try to remove adware it shows me this:

Interesting. Etrecheck has integrated the malware removal app WalwareBytes, but it looks like it won't work without a backup. Makes sense I guess.

Try downloading MalwareBytes direct and running it to get rid of the adware. Do it while in a safe mode boot so none of that stuff is running while it is trying to delete it.

So I removed adware with MalwareBytes and did it while in Safe Mode. That didnt solve the issue.

You need to try the other suggestions I posted in post #9. Like I said, the fact a safe mode boot fixes this is proof it is one of the launch/startup items in the EtreCheck list.

I suggested where to start in post #9. If that does not fix it, there is no easy way to tell which items it is other than just starting to remove them until you find the offender.

What I would do it print out the report and use it as a work sheet to mark off what you have tried. Make a folder on the Desktop then drag half of these items on the list out at a time to narrow it down. Once you find the offender you can put everything back.

Already removed wacom drivers and disconected google drive. Do you know how could I get rid of that Symantec stuff?

I will go through the list as you said and see if that helps.

Did you remove those items after you ran this latest Etrecheck report, because I still see them there.

Look in these folders for any from Symantec. You can see the folders in the report.

Code:
~/Library/LaunchAgents (~ is your users folder)
/Library/LaunchAgents
/Library/LaunchDaemons
/Library/StartupItems
/System/Library/Extensions/

Good news. I solved it. I went to system preferences - users & groups - and unchecked every startup app and now it works. Im not sure which one was conflicting but I think it was that wacom bamboocore app that was left behind.

Anyways thank you all for your help , especialy Weaselboy ,for assisting on solving this issue. Will add the answer on top of the post for others.

Unchecking startup items in the Users and Groups panel does not disable them. It just forces them to start in the background. To disable an item, you have to click on it to highlight it and click the minus button at the bottom of the window.

Interesting. Etrecheck has integrated the malware removal app WalwareBytes, but it looks like it won't work without a backup.

Actually, Etrecheck has not integrated Malwarebytes in any way. It has its own adware removal functionality now. Some of Etrecheck's adware detection is based on the old AdwareMedic signatures, but that's outdated at this point.

Oh thanks... appreciate the clarification. I thought I had read EtreCheck was using MWB. I must have been thinking of the old AdwareMedic signatures you mention. I think it was mentioned in an earlier EtreCheck release note.

That's possible, I haven't looked at all the EtreCheck release notes.
