Mac says "you've got an iPod that appears to be corrupted" and asks me to restore - upon doing so, I get the message "unable to write to the last block of the device". When I open DiskUtility, it says SMART status is not verified, and size of the drive is 8kb. I disconnect it and reconnect again, now DiskUtility says the size of the drive is 17.59 TB. (It's a 160GB iPod classic, out of warranty).

Does anyone have advice for how to save this? I really can't afford another iPod anytime soon. Right now it's in Disk Mode and seems frozen on the "Ok to Disconnect" screen. Thanks.

Honestly, it sounds like a bad hard drive, and unfortunately there's nothing you can do about that. That's the downside of the classics. Superior storage, inferior durability.
