I thought there was an IMEI or some kind of phone identification printed on the box. How could you sell different iPhone in it?

The little sticker with IMEI details peels off pretty easily.

I've bought (and sold) a few boxes, it definitely adds to the value when selling an iPhone.

I used to purchase so much stuff on ebay I had 5 different accounts going to help me keep everything straight. All with 100% feedback. I really haven't purchased much there in several years since they started forcing the paypal thing on everyone.

Sell your box on Craigslist. There's a market for anything that came from Apple.

Let's face it, most selling boxes are hoping they can scam someone. They can come up with every excuse to justify their sale, by saying it's just a box, etc, but they are hoping some sucker falls for it. Simple as that.

When I was looking for a macbook air on ebay I seen a box listed and it was going for $280 I read the listing BOX ONLY NOTHING INSIDE its just that some people dont read or are unable to comprehend that its just a box and when they receive a empty box they raise 9 kinds of heck and its a bad situation for everyone. But there is another side to this and its wrong that you cant sell just a box because I decided a while back to buy all the boxes I didnt have iphone 2g 3gs and 4s boxes just because I decided I was going to collect them and they look pretty cool lined up on my shelf so this puts a road block down for people who may find themselves in the same situation.

Duped due to not reading is not duped.. It's just not reading.

I remember some people being intentionally misled here in the past, I think that's completely different.

I wasn't saying the ones who had read the listing and understood it were duped. I was saying enough people had been duped and thus, the new policy.

Luckily I live in a world where I understand being duped and being stupid.

I have my empty 4S box wrapped in tin foil to protect it the elements. Once all you suckers toss yours in the trash, mine will come out of it's foil and be worth a fortune.

A) Odd that you want to sell a box, I mean how much do you even sell that for?
B) eBay wants to make things idiot-proof because people are idiots and see the box and assume they get the phone too. (Even though you are probably only charging $5)
C) IMEI and hardware information is on the box and that can be personal data. Most people won't take that off before sending the box to the buyer.

Looking back I wasn't selling it to make $, I thought for sure someone would want it. I felt like it would be a shame to throw it away. If anyone wants it they can have it for the cost of shipping.
I might try craigslist, but I feel like with craigslist you get so much noise that it's sometimes not worth the hassle

I just sold a box last week, after buying my 5s I gave my 4s to my daughter and traded her 4 in, handset only. We kept the charger and cable as spares, and I sold the 4 box with the the cardboard folder and sim pin for £10 + postage.

Sold on a forum to someone specifically looking for an empty box.

He wanted the box as he was about to give an iPhone 4 to someone as a gift and felt it would look better boxed.

The small white sticker with IMEI details peels off quite neatly.

My wife traded her beat up 4S to apple when we upgraded to the 5S and I sold my iPhone 5 on eBay.
I found her left over 4S box and threw it up on eBay thinking someone would want it.

Today I got a stern email from eBay citing a vague code "MC067" that my item was removed.

I called eBay for more information, and was told that they prohibit selling empty iPhone boxes because the box "should go with the phone" and could be "used for other purposes."
The rep went on to elaborate that Apple prohibits eBay from allowing sales of empty boxes and even the shopping bags that are given out when you buy an iPhone unless they are sold with the original iPhone.

I find this to be a bit ridiculous, but not worth losing my eBay account over. Just gonna toss the box in the trash.

Has anyone heard of this before?

Lookit this one, I was bidding on headphones and the box "happened" to be included...it sold.

maybe if you word your listing, it'll sell.

Maybe the inside papers.

eBay 4s box w/ headphones, cable

I tried to sell an empty Rolex box on ebay about 5 years ago, it was pulled also.

Iphone has equaled Rolex as a status symbol it seems:rolleyes:

Ah I gotcha, and yeah, good luck with CL. Nothing but scammers lol

I got this same message and a cease/desist from Louis Vuitton from selling a couple of bags (Paper Retail Sales Bags) that I got when I bought items from their retail store. I had a few listed on eBay and all were removed LOL They said by selling these I could be assisting in fraud and helping people sell counterfeit items.

Kind of annoyed me because 8X11" paper bags were selling for $20-$30 apiece.

And they are right. Search these very forums for links to auctions where people bid a substantial amount of cash for a box. In spite of the listing stating it was for the box only, bidders bid and obviously enough were duped to the point where eBay made a good decision to not allow the sale of empty boxes.

This is a wonderful move by eBay.

If its very well stated its for box only no phone included then how is it the sellers fault or a scam?
You can sell anything on ebay but not an iphone box? All kinds of other ridiculous stuff go for sale there every day.
I don't get it how one would get duped/scammed if an auction clearly states on the title and bottom description its for original box only, iphone NOT included.
I sold a few iphone boxes years ago and some people where paying like $40-50 for the original box. It was nuts that someone wanted to pay that much for the box but why not be able to sell it if you're honest about it without trying to pull a scam?

eBay looks out for eBay and that includes minimizing headaches for themselves.
They made this move either because stupid people complained and generated a lot of chargebacks or because Apple complained and threatened legal action, or both.
Other types of empty boxes are most definitely allowed (there were empty Tom Kuhn yo-yo boxes available only last week) so this is apparently a specific rule for Apple and other high-priced or litigious brands only.
Whatever's behind it -- if you don't like eBay's rules, don't play eBay's game.

It's because people can use the authentic boxes or bags and use it to scam other people with fake products inside them. Isn't this super obvious?

Didn't say it was a scam either.

It is a bummer that people can't understand this concept. I did not lay specific blame, unless you are reading magical invisible words that I do not recall typing. eBay, as a corporation, has determined that selling empty boxes has led to issues. Call it what you want but in the end, eBay has had to use their resources to resolve said issues. If it is out of ignorance, intentional misleading of a buyer, ambiguity, etc, they have determined that the best course of action is to simply not allow an empty box to be sold on their site. End of story.

I have yet to side with eBay in over a decade of being on their site; however, this makes sense to me. It doesn't have to make sense to anyone else, I still get it.

i'm looking for one if you've still got it. i'm going to sell a new "refurbed" IP4s on eBay and am guessing i'll get a little more if i have a box to go with it.

I don't understand all the board hate over selling boxes?

Some folks want a box. Other folks have a box they don't want.
That constitutes a market.

It doesn't matter whether you understand the need/desire for a box, that is irrelevant. There are potential buyers and sellers. Period.

Having said that, I can totally understand why eBay has made their decision...that particular market is fraught with headaches for them. Buyers who don't know what they are buying, fraudsters stocking up, intentionally misleading sellers, etc., all intermixed with legitimate sellers and legitimate buyers.

But for those saying buying or selling a box is "stupid", there is no doubt I can look though a week's worth of your transacations and come up with "stupid" also.

People pay £10-£15 for an Iphone box. Same for empty games console boxes it's handy if you got a second hand phone without any box and want to keep it for resell value.
