After numerous posts on the Apple Discussions site and spending 4 hours one afternoon with the "geniuses" I still can't send email from the SMTP setting for my Exchange account. I've literally tried everything, IMAP is turned on on the office server, we use MXLogic for upstream/downstream filtering but the IP address is the same as it is for our network.

I'm beyond frustrated. Is anyone else having issues with SENDING mail via their Exchange server settings? Hotmail and my .mac account send and receive just fine. I've had to "send on behalf of" with every email that I respond to viw the work Exchange server and it's pretty ridiculous.

At the apple store, I used the same exact settings in their Entourage account that I use in Mail and it IMMEDIATELY connected and allowed me to send. I'm just not real fired up over spending $150 for bloated MS software when I've been operating just fine without it.

PLEASE LEND A HAND! Thanks!

The subject of Microsoft Exchange Server has been discussed on this forum too many times to count. Entourage 2004 and Entourage 2008 can use Exchange settings if your IT staff has enabled the required settings. They can also access Exchange via IMAP if your IT staff has enabled IMAP.

Unlike Outlook, Entourage cannot auto-discover an Exchange server nor can it auto-configure an Exchange account. This must be done manually by the user. My advice to you is to find a Windows computer that has Exchange access. Examine an installation of Outlook on the computer and copy its settings. Transfer those settings to Entourage.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm not using Entourage. And I pulled the settings from my Outlook PC account that interfaces with my office server. Same exact settings under "Exchange" in Leopard Mail and can not send. I can receive mail all day long, but sending throws a "Cannot find server" error.

Maddening really.

Are you trying to send from within your workplace's network, or from home? If you're at home are you connecting via VPN? Can you ping the smtp server? Have you tried another IMAP client like Thunderbird (just for testing ... you can delete it afterwards if you prefer Mail)

I can read email via IMAP from my employer, but can only send when I'm connected to the VPN, ie. when I'm within the company network.

Even if IMAP is enabled, if the Exchange server isn't configured to allow connections from outside the firewall, you will be able to only receive mail, not send.

Outbound SMTP server

I'm having the same trouble. The inbound server, and the OWA server set up nicely. But as I set up the Outgoing SMTP server for my Exchange account, it seems to hang while looking for it (mine is the same server for all 3). It doesn't even seem to get to the user/password authentication.

Using another SMTP server to send messages works, but then it's tagged with that email address, and not the Exchange one.

This system is inside our network, and is running Mac OS X 10.5.7.

I tried both our inside and outside FQDN, as well as the IP address. I can ping the server. I can set up the other services - no problem. But the Mail SMTP hates Exchange (or the other way around).

If anyone finds a solution, post it please.

Accessing a foreign SMTP server is something of a black art. Some can be accessed as though they are on your domain. However, an increasing number of domains deny access to foreign SMTP servers in order to reduce the amount of SPAM generated on their domains. Some foreign SMTP servers can still be accessed on Port 587 instead of the usual Port 25. Many cannot be accessed at all.

One thing that you might consider is sending your private messages through your Exchange server, but include a "Reply to:" line. However, you must understand that your firm owns all messages sent through its server. But then, if you are using your firm's computer, then all of your messages belong to your firm anyway.

Me, too ... in Snow Leopard and Mail 4.2

Same experience: I can read e-mail on the server just fine. But Mail will not send.

But when I use Entourage 2004 with the exact same IMAP settings, it will send without a problem. I just don't like Entourage. :(

We have Outlook Server 2003 at work.

Same problems..

Hello

I too is having issues setting up my works exchange server on My Mac. I have tried Mail:

Under the incoming server I always get the not responding part although I have setup the same server I used in Outlook 2007 in Windows 7 and on my iPhone.

Entourage 2008:

Same, I always get the error that the server is not responding.

This is extremely frustrating as I would love to have my exchange server working either Mail or with Entourage
