Can't stop AMBER Alert from continually going off!

All I know is that.. People wouldn't be complaining about how many AMBER alerts a person is getting if their child was missing

Argue that...

I also want you to argue the flash flood warnings to the victims of Katrina and Sandy

Oh yes, totally.

Because every kid is special and should have the universe revolve around them. I can't wait until they start firing this system off every day, and people have to disable the alerts because they can't get any goddam sleep otherwise. Then the carriers will retaliate by making the alerts mandatory (but slightly less intrusive), and people will get used to ignoring them just as they would a spam text.

Brilliant!

Oh, and by the way...

There is a gigantic chasm of a difference between alerting me that some disgruntled divorcee broke into their own house to reclaim their offspring so they can shower them in materialistic gifts elsewhere (which I can do nothing about 900 miles away without even so much as a picture of the perp or vehicle), and a giant 40 metre tsunami wave heading in my general direction.

Frankly, I couldn't care less about the latter because it doesn't affect me and there's nothing I can do about it. I care very much about the former because in about 20 minutes I'm going to be crushed under a wall of water if I don't get the hell out of the way.

I've only ever gotten 1 flash flood warning. Went off in the middle of the night, about 30 mins before the storm hit, and only went off once. So mine has been working well, I suppose. AT&T 5

Yeah well the latest amber alert situation in CA involved more than a divorcee fighting to keep their kid. It involved the mother and the 8 year old son killed and the 16 year old daughter kidnapped.

I get that the server malfunction( or whatever it is causing it) keeps on sending the same stuff over and over and over is annoying. Or maybe the alert is a bit too broad( though depending on where you since the person is believed to be heading to Mexico, Texas, or another state). You may be 900 miles away, but depending on this guys travels he could be in your area in a day or so....

But worry me about getting an amber alert in the middle of the night. My sleep is more important than a kids life.....

I'll reiterate: I don't mind it in the middle of the night, if it respects the Do Not Disturb settings (seriously... the description of a car isn't going to make a difference if I'm sleeping and therefore not out on the roads!) but if the government, wireless carriers and manufacturers of smartphones aren't responsible and leave bugs in the system that continually tell people the same info over and over and over again, people are just going to turn it off all together, and that would be a pity.

So much for you being an human being I guess.. May god bless you..

Anyway.. The purpose of the alert is to alert you! And it could be 900 miles away or by the off chance 500 feet from you.. If you was to see something really suspicious that might be related, it might not. then you would report it but I'm sure a selfish person such as yourself might just go bout his business

Is that only for amber alerts? Cause if a tornado was about to hit you, I'm sure you wouldn't mind do not disturb being overridden. ;)

You know what?

Some of you have the ****ing gall to call me in-human, but in reality we're talking about a giant turd of a system that barely works, and when it does it doesn't even give you any meaningful information to visually identify what the hell is going on.

If your children are so goddam important, why does your system for alerting people suck so much? Hmm? Maybe while you're busy telling your $DEITY to bless my rotten soul, you can do a little critical thinking for yourself (I know it's hard) and figure that one out.

We are better then this. We have access to incredible technologies, but none of it works together and nobody is interested in leveraging any of it to make a difference (patents, lawsuits, etc). So really, in the end, it's not me who doesn't give a **** about your brat- it's society in general. Take it up with them. Wake me up when you figure out how to send me pictures of the car, the people involved (or physical descriptions), etc. Until then, stop pretending like you actually care with your pathetic system and let me get my sleep.

So you want to receive notices of emergencies and amber alerts, but only when it's convenient for you?

I think there should be a middle ground where they are not obnoxious. Maybe more advanced do not disturb settings that give more control over alerts given? How many people woken up by an amber alert in the middle of the night immediately go looking for the car in question?

I'm a big supporter of wireless alerts, and I think they are a great tool. I don't want everyone to turn them off because they are overused at inconvenient times with sounds that are too loud.

To clarify some confusion:

Amber alerts will only go off once per situation, unless information is being updated. .

That would be incorrect !

A friend said he got over 20 in a 24hour period and they were all exactly the same. The "officals" are admitting they have a problem with the system as it is happening cross platform on MANY devices.

I hate to think of the billions of dollars our government has and is spending on programs like the EBS system. When I get my weekly test the screen on the TV scrambles and the audio goes to another channel selling jewelry! They government just can't do anything right excpet soak up our tax dollars.

I am sure the amber alert contract was given to some well deserving relative who has no idea how to make it work.;)

Most, after a few nights ago, have turned them off!

So my statement isn't incorrect. It's designed to go off once per alert, but it is going off multiple times as the result of a malfunction. It is only supposed to go off ONCE per situation if everything is working right. That's all I was saying here.

They are meant to be obnoxious, otherwise you won't notice them.

It's never a convenient time. If they receive info at 3am, should they wait until you are awake, had a few cups of coffee? In abduction cases, every second is critical.

I notice my phone when it makes a little ding for a text message. I don't need a loud alarm. I think Apple should provide the option for these alerts to have a more reasonable alert tone at night rather than waking up everyone who has to leave their phone on for one reason or another. It took three years to be able to change the mail tone, so who knows how long that will take.

I am all for the alerts myself, and am happy to have them. I just think they should provide options to keep people happy rather than just setting it up in a way that makes many people simply disable them.

no I am saying that it may not be a phone problem. It is more likely the goverment/amber alert people sent multiple signals. It is the goverment that is running this. Can't expect too much :p

I am not understanding you here. I never claimed it was a phone problem either. I simply stated that if the amber alerts are working as intended, one should only receive a single notification unless the information is updated. There are plenty of cases where I have personally seen the amber alerts work properly. Glitches can happen server side, or it can be as simple as an operator not knowing what they are actually doing.

It is important that the alerts are not so annoying that they get turned off, because if they are nobody can benefit from them.

As important as amber alerts are in getting word out about kidnappings and possibly saving lives, I think they should respect the DND settings. As someone already pointed out, how many people are going to go out in the middle of the night to help look for kidnap victims, and how effective will it be if everyone did that? All a middle of the night amber alert does is just wake people up for no good reason. It can be a giant pop-up you see first thing in the morning. It's not meant to mobilize people for immediate action, only to alert them to be on the lookout as they go along their everyday schedule.

Weather alerts, on the other hand, do need to wake people up so they can evacuate, or otherwise get prepared as the situation calls for.

But weather alerts are completely different from Amber alerts, and we all know that. Besides, that time in the middle of the night could mean the life or death of that child.

In short, whether you do something about that Amber alert is up to you. But those that would or could, should definitely know about it.

IIRC, that retired sheriff who saw them got hold of the FBI who staked them out in the middle of the night.

BL.

I haven't been following that story closely -- did this retired sheriff actually wake up from sleep, get dressed, and go on the stake out? If so, good for him.

But I think people should have a choice on whether they want to be woken up to receive amber alerts. It shouldn't be all or nothing, where if you opt to receive the alerts, you agree to being woken up at all hours. For some people, a good night's rest is crucial to their functioning in the day, For instance, I wouldn't want my doctor to be working on not enough sleep because he was woken in the night by an amber alert for which he could do nothing. After all, people like that sheriff who CAN contribute meaningfully to an amber alert situation are few and far between.

With as much money that our government spends on communications, I sure hope our police are not depending on Amber Alerts.

What a thing to be annoyed by. Might save a persons life.
[doublepost=1501889356][/doublepost]Could save someone or kill them. Following a sketchy individual as part of your job and an obnoxious alert goes off on your phone. And poof said crazy person knows your their and stabs you with a knife. Or worse. A girl could be hiding from a person and once again the obnoxious alert goes off and poof we have another dead and raped girl. It's a nice gesture thinking they help but in some situations it's just better for those ****ing alerts to be able to be vibration only and not loud.

First of all, this is a 4 year old thread. Second, if it's your job to follow people discreetly, you're pretty bad at it if you don't know how to properly silence your phone beforehand. The other scenario is probably not so likely either weighed against the likelihood of the alert helping to find a kid. In either case, this is why the alert can be turned off in the settings.
