So I used to use gmail for all my calendars, and just sync iCal and my iPad through gmail, but now that I'm getting my 4s I want to ditch gmail and do everything just through my Mac/iCal. So I have my entire Calendar set up on my MacBook, and my problem is that I cannot get that to sync to iCloud.

Everything is on the "Home" Calendar. I have that calendar enabled on and on my iPad, but nothing will sync to it. I have no accounts - I'm just using the calendar on my computer.

The same problem happens with reminders. When I make a reminder in the reminders app it will sync to but not my computer, and when I make one on my computer it won't sync to the iPad or

So can you help me figure out how I can make my computer's iCal calendar (and reminders) the calendar that shows up on my iPad and on

    Thanks in advance!

P.S. I'm running Lion 10.7.2 on an iPad 2 with iOS 5, on the current 17" MacBook Pro.

Solved the problem. Just incase anyone wants to know, you have to set up an account in iCal through iCloud, and then change all your events to be on the iCloud calendar.

My reminders synced perfectly on my phone, iCloud and iCal but I can't get my iCal events to sync to my iPhone or iCloud.

I have switched on the calendars option in System Preferences like the image shows but it still won't show up on either iCloud or on my iPhone. Can you go into more detail how you solved that problem?

How do you change all the events to be on the iCloud calendar?

Okay so I finally got my calendars on iCloud but it took some work. I first created calendars right on iCloud and then changed all my events in iCal to iCloud calendars and then just deleted the calendar lists from "On my mac" calendar.

So now I only have calendars that are on iCloud and now they all sync. Again, it took a lot of work since I have a bunch of events to change, but it all works now.

    iCal update

The one thing overlooked on this blog as to why this connection to iCloud is not working with iCal, is you have to update OSX first. I discovered the iCloud servers do not show up until you do so. As soon as I did, the calendar synced!

hi, can you explain this part? "I first created calendars right on iCloud and then changed all my events in iCal to iCloud calendars and then just deleted the calendar lists from "On my mac" calendar".

    Steps to sync calendars

After I set up iCloud to sync with my Mac, nothing synched with either contacts or calendar events. I went all the way to Tier 3 of AppleCare to solve it. Here's a summary.

Make backup archives of Address Book and iCal so they can be easily restored if things go bad:
⁃ In Address Book app - File: Export: Address Book Archive ...
⁃ In iCal - File: Export: iCal Archive ...
    Close Address Book and iCal
Uncheck Contacts and Calendar in System Preferences: iCloud
⁃ Allow contacts and events to be deleted from computer (scary, but we have backups)
Close System Preferences and wait 2 minutes
Open System Preferences and put checkmarks by Contacts and Calendar
    ⁃ Select merge if asked
⁃ Should immediately see spnning wheel next to icons in preferences dialog box meaning sync has started
⁃ Contacts sync only took me 5 or 10 seconds before things started populating
⁃ However, Calendars required one more step (next)
Must copy calendars in iCal from MobileMe (or wherever you have them, perhaps OnMyMac, to iCloud
⁃ First, export each calendar, one by one, to a Finder folder as follows:
⁃ Click on a calendar and then File: Export: Export
⁃ Next create new iCloud calendars in iCal. Do this once for each calendar as follows:
⁃ File: New Calendar: iCloud (iCloud sync must be active in System Preferences for iCloud to show in list)
⁃ Then give calendar a name
⁃ Finally, drag each exported calendar file from the Finder folder to the appropriate iCloud calendar

So I didn't "create the calendars right on iCloud" but rather I created the calendars in the iCloud part of iCal and then they showed up in iCloud on the web. This was the next-to-last step, above.

    Hope this helps. :)

ical & iCloud sync, just turn off and on?

    I had the same problem.
Installed ios5 on my iPhone 4 first. Then bought Lion.

iCal on my macbook pro would not sync with iCloud calendar.

After reading the above post, I synced everything, backed up iCal and Contacts, then turned OFF iCal and Contacts in the iCloud system pref on my mac.
After a couple minutes, turned it back on...

Then merge accounts, and manually clean up any duplicates on the iCal.
    Now its synced!!

    thanks for this help

I'm totally new to MAc, having been on PC for decades.
I have to say I'm really concerned that such an important and well advertised feature as iCloud syncing with iCal is so complicated to set up, and secondly that the information is not put right out there instead of having to be dug up like this.

    Is this typical of Apple?

I hope not but I'm getting a bad feeling about it.

Problem: getting iCal events from iPhone to MacBook

Posts here have been very helpful, but I events posted in iCal on my iPhone that are not transferring to iCloud, and therefore my MacBook. Events going in the other direction seem to work.

I am having this issue to, and the fixes above have not worked! My iPhone and iCloud are good, it is my Macbook ical that is the issue- i get this message:
Access to account “” is not permitted.

    The server responded:
    “HTTP/1.1 403 Forbidden”
    to operation CalDAVAccountRefreshQueueableOperation.

    Any ideas?

Hello all, thank you for this string of suggestions. My issue: I've had a MacBook since 2007 and an iPod touch, no problems syncing ever, worship iCal. :) But then I updated to IOS 5 and most of my calendars created duplicate events on the iPod iCal. Totally annoying. Some events even have triples! Next, last month, I got an iPad, very exciting, but now my three icals are a disaster. :( iPad seems to be in itts own little iCal world. Some events sync but not others, seems random.

    Any suggestions?
    Thank you for your time.

    Another solve

I have been having the problem in which I was entering things on my iPhone and iPad calendars and not having them show up on my Mac, but things I entered in my Mac showed up fine on my iPhone and iPad.

I discovered that when I was entering events into my iPhone and iPad, they were showing up on a default calendar in a Hotmail account, rather than an iCloud account. For some reason both my mobile devices share that Hotmail account, but my computer calendar only has iCloud and Exchange accounts and I haven't been able to get it to take the Hotmail account.

But when I went into my iPad calendar and edited everything that wasn't showing up on my MacBook, lo and behold, they all were on Hotmail calendars. I hit edit on those events and selected an iCloud calendar instead, viola! They all showed up on my Mac.

So just make sure any event you enter onto a mobile device is going onto a iCloud calendar.

I have now done everything you suggested and added a TEST EVENT in ical.

Should icloud display the new event after a short period of time?
