i have a 2011 iMac 27 inch and i like El capitan and had no intention to upgrade but it appears that now that i updated itunes to the latest version that was just released 2 days ago i can now no longer sync my iPhone X to with the iMac as a message pops up prompting me to update the operation system on the iMac. is there no way for me to sync anymore unless i update the system on the iMac?

Curious as well.
I'm on High Sierra but after upgrading to iOS 12 there was some message about my audiobooks/ebooks etc not syncing without Mojave which is due next week..
It only registered with me as I hit next so not 100% sure what it was all about.

I normally don't upgrade my macos for a few months, always some nasty bug at launch that would effect me.

I updated my iPad Pro to iOS 12 then found that iTunes on my 5K iMac running Yosemite no longer recognised it. After spending an hour talking to Apple I tried updating to El Capitan but it wouldn’t let me. I have programs that aren’t compatible with newer OS so very reluctant to upgrade. Finally had to go to High Sierra, but won’t go any further, and am now very concerned that audiobooks are no longer able to be synced. I’ll be checking this out later today.

Is there no easy way to downgrade to the previous version of iTunes? i would have never updated iTunes to this latest version had i known i wouldn't be able to sync my iPhone X with my iMac anymore.

You need to install developers xcode
no you don't...
It's a bug. The fix and explanation is already posted here.
I don't have it installed, and I can sync. It's the stupid popup that either didn't popup or was missed. Reinstalling iTunes or that link that is posted earlier does fix it.

Edit: oh crap... Just realized this is NOT the thread it's in... I'll find the right thread.
Here it is.. whoops.

yeah that link wasn't in here when I responded. I only responded with "xcode" as a remedy because in the past when iTunes wasn't compatible with a beta iOS, installing a developer xcode was the solution.

Yeah there were two similar threads, I thought it was the other when I posted that.. I didn't even scroll up, just posted that thinking people are too lazy to scroll up. And I was the lazy one lol.

So did Apple release a new iTunes update that can be applied from
The Mac AppStore just like every other iTunes update? Or do I need to download some sort of a hotfix or supplemental update?

The solution that worked for me was to upgrade from Yosemite to High Sierra, then, even though iTunes is already up to date, download it again and reinstall. Plug in phone or iPad and then launch iTunes, you’ll get a pop-up software update window. Allow this update and then all works again - no problem with regard to audiobooks either.

Do I have to upgrade to High Sierra though? Is there no way to stay on El Capitan?

I don’t know, I was unable to update from Yosemite to El Capitan…I tried. Try downloading a new iTunes from Apple (not via AppStore), install it (no need to uninstall original), plug in phone and launch iTunes. If it helps, this is the link I used to download iTunes: https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1977?locale=en_GB
