can't transfer purchases to iTunes on new computer

Hi, I'm trying to transfer my apps from my iphone to itunes. So do I click on transfer purchases ?

When I click on transfer purchases, it says that my iphone doesn't have enough space. I don't have enough space on my iphone so is there no way to transfer my apps to my itunes apps library ?

Actually i don't understand why I need to have free space on my iphone when I'm transfering over my apps from my iphone to itunes .
