Hi, I just bought iBook g4 and studying it :)

I can’t do fresh install right now so I work with OS it has. This laptop is from school, but I don’t see any limitations on it. Still I can’t update it.

I’ve downloaded 10.4.11 combo update, but I’m getting this error:

Tried small update from 10.4.7 >> 10.4.8 but no luck. I even tried web update, but system says I’ve got latest version available.

Before I find a way to install fresh clean os, maybe there is smth I may try additionally? Thanks!

Are you sure you’re using the 10.4.11 Combo update?

Does the iBook run 10.4.7 Client or Server? You need the correct Combo update.

That download is the correct one if you're running 10.4.7 Client.

Click the Apple logo > About This Mac:
  • If it says "Mac OS X" it's Client.
  • If it says "Mac OS X Server" it's Server. In that case, you need this update.
Are your date and time correct? If the error persists, click Window > Installer Log (or something like that) when it's displayed. What does it say?

Tried Onyx. Did all the tests and cleaning, nothing wrong. Tried log, but there is no error, it’s just my drive doesn’t suite for some reason.

1. Go to System Preferences, Date & Time
2. Unlock the Preference Pane
3. Uncheck "Set date and time automatically"
4. Leave the time as is, change year to 2006
5. Apply changed date, close System Preferences.
6. Try installing the update again.

Setting year to 2006 didn’t help :(

Maybe admin of this school somehow disabled update on this laptop?

I would suspect, based on a limited Google search, that there are some system components installed already that are actually newer than those of the updates.

I think you're in for either an Archive and Install or an Erase and Install.

Okay, I’ve got 10.4 dmg file, but I currently can’t burn dvd… maybe I can install fresh os from flash drive or even use restore function where I point on this dmg with os and drag HDD as destination?

Yes, you can install Tiger from a USB flash drive. It’s best to restore the DMG to the flash drive using Disk Utility on the iBook itself.

Partition the flash drive using Apple Partition Map (APM) with one “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” partition, then mount the DMG, drag “Mac OS X Install DVD” into the source field and the partition on the flash drive into the destination field.

If it doesn’t work: double-click the dmg to mount it and use the “Mac OS X Install DVD” volume that appears as the source.

I’ve formatted usb as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), it is apple partition table, I can see content of this dmg files on usb but I can’t set usb as startup disk. Not from os not with alt launch. Hmm

You have to set the flash drive as the boot drive in Open Firmware:

Stuck like this for some time, still waiting. Only blinking light on flash prevents me from force rebooting. Takes ages to install OS…

Nope, it’s dead. No idea… restarted pc and couldn’t even load installer. Next time it stuck in another place. Maybe flash drive is slow, I dunno…

Maybe I can burn proper dvd from windows? I’ve got windows pc here, but no other Mac…

Okay, looks like I somehow fixed the issue. I’ve unchecked printer drivers and additional languages. Doing so I lowered the amount of data needed to be read from flash and looks like now installation go further.
