Cant update IOS or restore in iTUnes

I have tried to update my IOS to 8.1.3 on my iPad 3. The update fails and it suggested I restore to factory settings.

Pressing this option downloads a file (iPad3,1_8.1.3_12B466_Restore.ipsw 1.7Gb). Itunes then says it is etracting the files. Then nothing happens and the reset to factory setting dialogue box appears and when selected it downloads the same file again.

I have done this 8 times now and as I am on a limited usage broadband connection, it is getting tedious.

NowI have an ipad that I cannot open and don't know what to do about it.

I cannot use Apple online chat as it wants my serial number - which requires the serialnumber, which I cant retreive because I cant switch on!

Anyone any ideas please?

I'm not totally sure but if could be your broadband connection. What do you mean limited use? Could the connection be dropping out sporadically? That'd kill any updates for sure.

Otherwise, any chance of using a laptop or PC and do the update through iTunes itself?

Do you get an error code when trying to restore the iPad?

What I mean by limited is that I have a download limit per month of 26Gb and that continually downloading the same file is erroding this.

I am connected to my laptop and doing the update through iTunes. In the past I did this through WiFi connection and this may be the first IOS update attempted through iTunes.

I have the latest iTunes and have replaced the USB cable.

I dont recall any error code, but I did note that during download the Apple logo appeared on the iPad and then back to the connect to iTunes logo.

At the end of the download it says its processing the fileand then nothing happens.

The iPad is in recovery mode.

Follow the instructions in this link to restore the iPad.

Do you have a backup as this will erase the iPad. If not it may be possible to use TinyUmbrella to kick it out of recovery mode.

I don't seem to be able to get tinyumbrella to work and using another tool (recboot) alsodoesnot work. The former starts to work and just leaves a black rectangle in middle of screen. It produces a log with the following in it:

You running this on Windows?

Make sure java is up to date and you run TU as an administrator.

I am running Win 7 and have the latest Java.

I found a site detailing how to make umbrella work, but it doesnot show my device.

Now while doing "one last try" I find the iPad will not even display anything. Maybe this was the problem all along?

Thanks verymuch for your input, but I fear a visit to the store is nowmy only option.
